DJI Teases First Electric Bike: What We Know So Far

Although it may seem unusual, there's no mistaking the recent teaser that drone manufacturer DJI posted on Instagram. It appears that DJI is developing an electric bicycle.

And not just any electric bike, but one with a mid-drive motor. Mid-drive electric bicycles, which have their motor mounted by the pedals rather than in the wheel hub, are typically perceived as more upscale and sophisticated due to superior power delivery and balance. However, these benefits often come with additional costs and complications.

The teaser video from DJI, shared on the company's Instagram account, shows an exploded view of a mid-drive motor settling into the frame of an unidentified bicycle. With little of the bike frame visible, it's challenging to determine the exact direction DJI might be taking with its two-wheeled plans.

We know very little about the drive system, except that it is branded "DJI Avinox" on the motor casing. However, it looks like we will learn more soon, as DJI is expected to make an official announcement regarding the new device on July 3.

While DJI is best known for its professional and consumer drones, the company has significantly expanded in recent years to capitalize on its filming technology in the broader videography market. DJI has released action cameras, stabilized cameras, wireless audio systems, and other peripherals for filming.

However, entering the personal transportation market would represent a notable shift in focus for DJI.
