B4UFLY App

An enhanced app, B4UFLY, has now been launched to assist hobbyist drone users, providing interactive maps that delineate where drone operation is allowed and disallowed.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has collaborated with Aloft, previously known as Kittyhawk, to revamp the FAA's original mobile application. The aim is to augment the user experience, helping recreational drone pilots determine the safety of their planned flight areas. The B4UFLY app offers a comprehensive understanding of the situation to these pilots and other drone operators. However, it doesn't permit users to secure airspace authorizations for regulated airspace; these are only accessible through the FAA's Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC).

B4UFLY is a free app downloadable from the App Store for iOS users and the Google Play store for Android users.

In addition, a desktop version of B4UFLY is available for those seeking to do preflight planning and research.

The app boasts several key features, including:

  • A transparent "status" indicator that updates the operator on whether it's safe to fly. For instance, it indicates that flying within the Special Flight Rules Area around Washington, D.C. is off-limits.

  • Comprehensive, interactive maps with customizable filters.

  • Details on regulated airspace, special use airspace, critical infrastructure, airports, national parks, military training routes, and temporary flight restrictions.

  • A feature that allows users to verify the safety of different flight locations by either searching for a specific location or adjusting the location pin.

  • Quick access to other FAA drone resources and regulatory information.
